05 – Centre for Art and Craft

Our College, N.K.T. National College of Education for Women, Triplicane, Chennai, has an Excellent Centre for Art and Craft. Arts and Crafts describe a wide variety of activities involving making things with one’s own hands.

The core characteristics of the Arts and Crafts movement is a belief in craftsmanship which stresses the inherent beauty of the material, the importance of nature as inspiration, and the value of simplicity, utility, and beauty.

Our Centre for Art and Craft develops in the students, the art of  self-expression, socialization, enhances cognition and dexterity, enhances creativity and sharpens skills of decision making. Through arts and crafts, our B.Ed. students learn to value and appreciate artifacts and images across cultures and times. Experience in design, art, and crafts enable them to reflect critically on their own work and those by others. They learn to act and think like designers and artists, working intelligently and creatively. They also learn about the preservation of heritage through art.

Adding to this, Our Model School N.K.T. National Girls Higher Secondary School has the Andal Auditorium, an open air theatre with a gallery. The Kalamandapam, its brightest jewel, was designed as a theatre of fine arts by our founder, N. K. Thirumalachariar. Artist Legends like, Dr. M. G. Ramachandran, Dr. Shivaji Ganesan, Sri. R. S. Manohar etc., have stepped in the N.K.T. soil to enact plays.
