1966

Founding of the National Training College for Women (now called as N.K.T. National College of Education for Women) with the strength of 80.

1967

The Kamala Nehru Hostel was dedicated to the National Training College, at present NKT National College of Education for Women.

1969

Permanent Affiliation status was accorded to the National Training College for Women by the University of Madras.

1972

B.T. Course was renamed as B.Ed. Course.

1973

The University of Madras granted approval to our former Principal Late Dr. Suseela Kumari Vyas to guide Ph.D. Scholars in Education.

1980

M.Ed. Course was introduced with the affiliation of the University of Madras.

1983

  • Ph.D. Degree in Education was introduced with the affiliation of the University of Madras.
  • Post Graduate Status was awarded to our College by the Directorate of Collegiate Education and University of Madras in consideration of the introduction of M.Ed., and Ph.D. Courses.

1986

The strength of B.Ed. Course was increased to 90.

1987

  • Introduction of the optional “Elements of Economics” at the B.Ed. level with the affiliation of the University of Madras which was inaugurated by Late Sri. C.R. Pattabiraman (Bar-at-law) former Union Minister, Ministry of Law and Company Affairs and President, Sriman. N. K. Thirumalachariar National Education Society
  • The strength of the B.Ed. Course was increased to 120.
  • Implementation of the Project on “Learning Disabilities” under College Humanities and Social Sciences Improvement Progrmmes (COHSSIP) (sponsored by UGC – VII Five Year Plan) was inaugurated by Dr. P.S. Balasubramanian, Professor and Head, Department of Education, University of Madras.
  • Introduction of the National Service Scheme.

1988

  • Confirmation of Autonomy to the College by the University of Madras, Government of Tamil Nadu and University Grants Commission.
  • Inauguration of the Psychology Laboratory by Hon’ble Sri Motilal Vora, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
  • Introduction of “Computer Education” as an optional with the affiliation of the University of Madras which was inaugurated by Dr. A. Gnanam, the then Vice- Chancellor, University of Madras.
  • The strength of the B.Ed. and M.Ed. Courses were increased to 145 and 9 respectively.
  • Dr. Suseela Kumari Vyas, Principal of our College was elected as Syndicate Member of University of Madras for one term.

1989

  • Introduction of the optional “Mass Communication” at the B.Ed. level, which was inaugurated by Thiru. V. Sankara Subbaiyan I.A.S., Former Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Education, Government of Tamilnadu.
  • The B.Ed. Course strength was increased to 167.
  • Introduction of the M.Phil. Course (with an intake of 4) with the affiliation of the University of Madras was inaugurated by Dr. H.B.N. Shetty, I.A.S., then Special Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Education, Government of Tamilnadu.

1990

The UGC funded an Institutional Project on Remedial Measures for Health and Population Education.

1991

The strength of the B.Ed., M.Ed., and M.Phil. Courses was increased to 200, 15 and 6 respectively.

1992

  • Celebration of the Silver Jubilee of the College in the august presence of His Excellency Hon’ble Thiru. Bhishma Narain Singh, then Governor of Tamilnadu.
  • In commemoration of this function, an Audio Visual laboratory was constructed and inaugurated by His Excellency.

1993

  • Introduction of Non-credit Courses.
  • State Award for the Best Teacher was conferred on our former Model School Headmistress and our Alumnae Smt. C. Chellammal.
  • Dr. Suseela Kumari Vyas, then Principal., Dr. Andal Raghavan, then Reader and Dr.Shanthi Promod, then Senior Scale Lecturer visited Stockholm Institute of Education , Sweden, as a visiting faculty.

1994

Approval was granted by the University of Madras to Dr. Shanthi Promod to guide Ph.D. Scholars in Education.

1998

Centenary Jubilee celebration of our founder Thiru N. K. Thirumalachariar in the august presence of His Excellency Late Thiru. R. Venkatraman, former President of India. His Excellency unveiled the founder’s statue, released the souvenir and distributed mementos to the staff.

2000

  • Introduction of Yoga Training for the B.Ed. and M.Ed. Students.
  • Dr. Shanthi Promod, then Principal and Dr. S. Vasanthi, then Reader visited Stockholm Institute of Education, Sweden as visiting faculty.

2001

  • College was accredited by NAAC with Five Star status.
  • Introduction of the optional ‘Integrated Education for the Visually Impaired’ at the B.Ed. Level.
  • Introduction of Intel Computer Training Programme for both faculty members and students at all levels.

2002

  • Approval was granted by University of Madras to Dr. Thilaka Suresh, the then reader in Biology to guide Ph.D. Scholars in Education.
  • Induction of Dr. Shanthi Promod, then Principal, Dr. S. Vasanthi, then Reader and Dr. Thilaka Suresh, then Reader as members into the Peer Team Panel of the National Council for Teacher Education.
  • Introduction of “Education of the Handicapped” as an elective paper for the B.Ed. Students.
  • Introduction of Certificate Course on Nursery Teacher Training.

2003

Instituting B.Ed. Special Education Programme with an intake of 20 in our institution.

2004

  • Integration of visually challenged students in our Model School under Sarva Shiksha Abiyan (SSA), with the financial support of our Management.
  • Introduction of two more Elective papers with the nomenclature1. Introduction of the Nature and Needs of Disabilities, 2. Education of the Low Vision Children into B.Ed. Programme Curriculum.
  • Instituting Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) Programme with an intake of 50 into our NKT National College of Education for Women was inaugurated by Thiru S.P. Thiyagarajan, the then revered Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras.
  • Launch of the Biannual Journal ‘Eduterate’.
  • Under Networking of the Autonomous Scheme, our College signed a MOU with St. Christopher’s College of Education (Autonomous) at M.Ed. Level offering supportive papers entitled ‘Philosophical and Sociological Foundations of Education’ and ‘Human Rights Education’.

2005

  • Introduction of Community Social Service scheme in the place of National Service Scheme, as the University of Madras sent a circular to all the Colleges of Education under their jurisdiction to dissolve the NSS unit to one year duration B.Ed. Programme.
  • The strength of B.Ed. Special Education was increased to 25 students inclusive of 3 seats reserved for foreign students.
  • The strength of D.El.Ed. was increased to 100.
  • Introduction of Elective Paper ‘Value Education’ in the B.Ed. Programme.
  • Installation of a conventional Language Laboratory to learn the art of communication in English.
  • Organization of the UGC Sponsored ‘A Three Day National Level Conference on ETECH 2005’.

2006

  • Implementation of UGC sponsored HEPSEN (Higher Education for Persons with Special Educational Needs) schemes to augment facility for the Visually Challenged.
  • Approval was granted by the University of Madras to Dr. S. Vasanthi, then Reader and Dr. S. Malathi, then Reader to guide Ph.D. Scholars in Education.
  • Induction of Dr. N. Kalai Arasi, Associate Professor as a member of NCTE’s Peer Team Visiting Panel.
  • Inauguration of the Abstinence Club in collaboration with the Adult Education Department, University of Madras.
  • Dr. J. Kausalya, then Associate Professor was elected as Academic Council Member of the University of Madras.
  • Inauguration of N.K.T. Consumer Club by Tmt. C. Chellammal, Former Headmistress of our model school.

2007

  • Renovation of the Madaboosi Sudarsanam Iyengar Hall.
  • Implementation of the revised syllabus for B.Ed. and M.Ed. Programmes.
  • Installation of RCI sponsored DSR antenna for enabling the students to participate in teleconferencing and telephonic conferencing.
  • Approval was granted by the University of Madras to Dr. J. Kausalya and Dr. N. Kalai Arasi to guide Ph.D. Scholars in Education.

2008

  • Confirmation of Autonomous Status for the M.Phil. Course.
  • Introduction of the core paper on ‘Life Skills for Teachers’ at the B.Ed. level.
  • Dr. S. Vasanthi, then Principal was elected as Academic Council Member of the University of Madras.
  • Appointment of Dr. S. Vasanthi, then Principal as Chairman, Ad-Hoc Board of Studies for B.Ed. Programme, Ex-Officio Member, Board of Studies for M.Ed., M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programme of Tamilnadu Teachers Education University.
  • Appointment of Dr. N. Kalai Arasi, Associate Professor of Computer Science- Education as Member of Ad-Hoc Board of Studies for B.Ed. Programme of Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University.
  • As per the direction of our Tamil Nadu State Government, Dr. J. Kausalya, Associate Professor of English -Education, and Dr. N. Kalai Arasi, Associate Professor of Computer Science-Education organized a 28 days Orientation Programme for the newly recruited 100 Assistant Professors in English by the Teachers Recruitment Board of Tamil Nadu to serve as Assistant Professors in Government Arts and Science Colleges, in our College.
  • Extension of Autonomous Status to our College by the University Grants Commission up to the academic year 2013-2014.
  • Organization of a National Seminar on ‘Perspectives of Holistic Health for Teachers’.
  • Construction of the Vyjayanthimala Block.
  • Organization of a Three Day State Level Workshop on ‘Advances in Science and Technology’.

2009

  • Our College was disaffiliated from the University of Madras and affiliated with Tamilnadu Teachers Education University.
  • Late Dr. Sarojini Varadappan, then President of Sriman. N.K. Thirumalachariar National Education Society, College Governing Body and College Committee received the most prestigious National Award of Padma Bhushan Award from her Excellency honorable President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Patil.
  • Introduction of the Optional Methods of Teaching History, Methods of Teaching Geography, Methods of Teaching Home Science and Methods of Teaching Commerce at the B.Ed. Level.
  • As per the direction of our Tamil Nadu State Government, Dr. N. KalaiArasi, Associate Professor of Computer Science- Education and Dr. S. Chamundeswari, then Assistant Professor of Physical Science-Education organized a 28 day Orientation Programme (In-service Training) in our campus for newly recruited 100 Assistant Professors in English by Teachers Recruitment Board of Tamil Nadu to serve as Assistant Professors in Government Arts and Science Colleges.
  • Extension of recognition for B.Ed. Special Education by the Rehabilitation Council of India from 2009-2010 to 2013-2014.
  • Organization of a Two Day State Level Seminar on “Recent Trends in Research on Education”.
  • Organization of a One Day State Level Workshop on ‘Sensitizing Teachers on Stress Free Teaching and Learning’.
  • Installation of ‘Reverse Osmosis’ for purified drinking water to the cost of Rs.2,80,000/
  • The entire College was renovated to the tune of Rs.40,00,000/
  • Construction of ramps in all our College blocks to the tune of Rs.5,00,000/-
  • Construction of disabled friendly toilets.

2010

  • Approval granted by the Tamilnadu Teachers Education University for our Ph.D. centre.
  • INFLIBNET service was provided to faculty, students and research scholars by the University Grants Commission through our Institution.
  • Enhancement of M.Ed. strength to 35.
  • Induction of Dr. S. Vasanthi, then Principal as member in NAAC Peer Team panel.
  • Appointment of Dr. S. Vasanthi, then Principal as Chairman, Board of Studies for B.Ed. Programme and as Ex-Officio Member, Board of Studies for M.Ed., M.Phil., and Ph.D. Programmes of Tamilnadu Teachers Education University.
  • Appointment of Dr. N. Kalai Arasi, Associate Professor of Computer Science- Education as Member of Board of Studies for the B.Ed. Programme of the Tamilnadu Teachers Education University.
  • Appointment of Dr. N. Kalai Arasi, Associate Professor of Computer Science- Education as Member of Board of Studies for the B.Ed. Programme of the University of Madras (Directorate of Distance Education).
  • Dr. S. Chamundeswari, then Assistant Professor of Physical Science-Education visited University of Duisburg, Germany, as visiting faculty.
  • Dr. N. Kalai Arasi, Associate Professor of Computer Science-Education and Dr. S. Chamundeswari, then Assistant Professor of Physical Science-Education visited Umea University, Sweden as a visiting faculty.
  • Commencement of construction of the new Students’ Hostel.
  • Organization of a Three Day Workshop on Development of Module for Life Skills for Teachers Practicum.
  • Organization of International Conference on ‘Embedding Information and Communication Technology in Higher Education for Quality Enhancement’.

2011

  • Our Institution was awarded with ‘A’ Grade with CGPA of 3.26 upon 4.00-point scale by NAAC.
  • Launch of Autobiography ‘Everlasting Reminiscences -My Rhythm of Life’ by our then beloved President, Late Dr. Sarojini Varadappan in the presence of Sri. Gopal Krishna Gandhi, Former Governor of West Bengal.
  • Organization of the Zonal Level Athletic Sports Meet in collaboration with Tamilnadu Teachers Education University.
  • Induction of Dr. S. Chamundeswari, then Assistant Professor of Physical Science-Education as one of the members of Board of Professional Entrance Examination, Jammu and Kashmir.

2012

  • Equivalence Government order for B.Ed. Special Education was obtained from Government of Tamilnadu. G.O. (Ms.) No.56 dated 24th April 2012.
  • Organization of the Third State Level Athletic Sports Meet in collaboration with Tamilnadu Teachers Education University.
  • Setting up of a laboratory for the visually challenged under the financial assistance of SAP.
  • Organization of Workshop on Statistical Analysis using SPSS.
  • A 21 day UGC Sponsored Refresher Course on Educational Technology for the Assistant Professors and Associate Professors of Government Colleges, Aided Colleges and University Departments was held from 4th to 24th February 2012 with the collaboration of Academic Staff College, University of Madras in our College, which was organized by Dr. S. Chamundeswari and Dr. S. Malathi.
  • Completion of UGC funded major project by Dr. S. Chamundeswari, the then Assistant Professor of Physical Science-Education.
  • Appointment of Dr. N. Kalai Arasi, Associate Professor of Computer Science- Education as Academic Council Member of Tamilnadu Teachers Education University.
  • Dr. S. Vasanthi, then Principal was one of the three invitees from Tamil Nadu by the Government of India to participate in the consultation meeting of Justice Verma Commission for revamping Teacher Education in India.
  • Dr. S. Chamundeswari, then Assistant Professor of Physical Science-Education visited University of Duisburg, Germany, Univeristy of Passau, Germany and Johannes Kepler University, Austria, as a visiting faculty.
  • Induction of Dr. S. Chamundeswari, then Assistant Professor of Physical Science-Education and Dr. S. Malathi, then Assistant Professor of Education as member of Peer Team Visiting panel of the National Council for Teacher Education.

2013

  • Introduction of Semester Pattern for the Practicum Component of B.Ed. Programme also.
  • Introduction of a Core paper on Evaluation and Measurement of Learning and Teaching in B.Ed. Programme.
  • Introduction of Internal Core paper on Development of Teaching Skills through Microteaching in B.Ed. Programme.

  • Extension of recognition for B.Ed (Special Education) Programme up to 2015-2016 by the Rehabilitation Council of India.
  • Implementation of the UGC Sponsored Financial Assistance under the Scheme of XII Five Year Plan.
  • Signed MOU with American Indian Foundation to enhance technology in the classroom for better Teaching and Learning.

2015

  • Launch of the Two Year duration B.Ed., M.Ed., B.Ed. (Special Education) Programmes with an intake of 200, 50, 30 respectively.
  • Extension of Autonomous status upto the academic year 2019 -2020 was accorded by the UGC, New Delhi.
  • UGC funded Major Research Project on ‘ Enhancing Socio-emotional Competence and Abilities of Student-teachers through Social Capital and Knowledge Sharing Interventions’ to Dr. S. Malathi, Associate Professor of Education.

2016

  • UGC Sanctioned Rs. 45 lakhs for the construction of Extension of Students’ Hostel.
  • UGC Sanctioned Rs. 60 lakhs for the construction of Indoor Stadium and Rs. 50 lakhs for the construction of Outfield Stadium.
  • College procured Gym and Sports equipment by utilizing UGC Sports Equipment Grant of Rs. 10 lakhs.
  • Extension of recognition for the B.Ed. (Special Education) Programme up to 2016-2018 by the Rehabilitation Council of India.
  • Our College accommodates the activities of the Rotary Club.

2017

  • Conduct of an International Conference on School Boards and Teacher Education by the Institution in collaboration with Thamizha Institute of Educational Technology and Research, TIERA and SITU Council of Educational Research on 8th and 9th December, 2017.
  • Organization of the Zonal Level Cultural and Sports Meet 2017-2018 of the TNTEU by the College on 8th and 9th February, 2018 in Madras University Union grounds.

2018

  • Extension of approval for B.Ed. (Special Education) Programme up to 2022-2023 by the Rehabilitation Council of India.
  • Organisation of ‘A Two Week Capacity Building Workshop for the Administrative Staff on Office Etiquette’ by the College in collaboration with TRANCENT: Centre for Personal Excellence and Tamil Nadu Technical Skill Training Centre, Chennai.

2019

  • UGC funded Major Research project on ‘Enhancing Socio-Emotional Competence and Abilities of Student-teachers through Social Capital and Knowledge Sharing Interventions’ was completed by Dr. S. Malathi, Associate Professor of Education.
  • Organisation of an Internationally Certified Gallup Strengths finder Workshop for the Faculty Members by the College in collaboration with Elzix Foundation, Mumbai.
  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SDS Academy of Behavioural Sciences to provide Professional Services to lead a healthy and active life style of students through their Rehabilitation Clinic

2020

  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Training Partner Imago Image Consultant, Manapakkam, Chennai to develop soft skills, value added programs among students and to prepare them to face the future confidently.

2021

  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Department of Educational Psychology, Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University, Chennai for Academic Co-operation.
  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tamil America Global Network Inc., Greater New York, USA, for mutual Collaboration, Cooperation and interaction towards the empowerment of students and teachers.
  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with AmbalTamil Sangam, Doha, Qatar to establish a Global stage for all education and education related activities.
  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Dr.M.G.R. Institute of Special Education and Research, Chennai for Student Exchange Programmes at the B.Ed. Level, Special Education.
  • Created a 51Hour World Record Programme: Iyal, Isai, NadagamVizha
  • The College received the Excellence in Community Service Award- 2020 for Creative, Innovative and Exceptional Commitment to Community from Ram Nagar AdiAndhara Welfare Sangam, Chennai.
